About the Coordination Office for Humanitarian & Human Rights for Tamils

The Coordination Office for Humanitarian & Human Rights for Tamils (COHHRT) was created to support the coordination of humanitarian assistance and human rights assistance for Tamils throughout the world, with a particular focus on the NorthEast of Sri Lanka.

COHHRT was created to provide a common framework and network for response to the humanitarian & human rights needs arising from war and natural disaster and to support the creation and implementation of environmentally, politically and culturally appropriate and sustainable development programs.

Background

Often humanitarian and human rights assistance and responses are hampered by a lack of coordination and accurate and timely information.

COHHRT’s mission is to provide a network to ensure coordination of groups throughout the world as they respond to rapidly changing situations during war and natural disaster.

COHHRT will strive to ensure that organizations receive appropriate information to enable them to assess needs, generate appropriate responses and ensure that the there are no gaps in the provision of humanitarian and human rights responses during the complex emergencies.

The Role of COHHRT:

· Create a space where the Tamil Diaspora and the humanitarian community can share and access information so as to improve the planning and delivery of humanitarian assistance.

· Enable the Tamil Diaspora and humanitarian community to improve the planning and delivery of humanitarian assistance.

· A source of information and data for the Tamil Diaspora and the humanitarian community.

Activities of the Humanitarian Information Centre -Tamils

· Coordinate the Tamil Diaspora and humanitarian organizations’ response to war and natural disasters.

· Provide information, assessments, background and analysis to the Tamil Diaspora, humanitarian actors and the international community.

· Advocate at all levels of international organizations, governments and international humanitarian and human rights organizations.
